Install mental ray Satellite. Install mental ray Satellite. Enable network rendering of Maya scenes among several slave computers. Each Maya license is permitted to distribute mental ray rendering tasks among up to four slave computers. Mental ray Satellite must be installed on all slave computers. The mental ray Satellite installers for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux are included in the Maya installation directory. There is currently no way to obtain the Mental Ray renderer for 3ds Max 2018 or higher, or Maya 2018 or higher. Mental Ray for Maya 2016-2018 Overview Mental Ray for Maya 2017 is an imposing rendering application and it supports the ray tracing for generating images. This application has been used in various different movies which includes The Matrix Reloaded, Hulk, Star Wars and The Day After Tomorrow to name a few.

Nvidia is giving away the latest Mental Ray release, Mental Ray 3.14, to 3ds Max and Maya users. Arnold Render is now the default renderer in Max 2018 and Maya 2017, and it’s a powerful easy to use tool, however, this download is extremely helpful if you’ve upgraded and need to open an older project.

This is the fine print: “Mental Ray for 3ds Max is FREE to use within an interactive 3ds Max session. A Mental Ray license is only required when you render outside of a 3ds Max session. Your license then enables rendering with headless 3ds Max, Mental Ray Satellite or Standalone mode, as well as the separately available NVIDIA Iray for 3ds Max plug-in.”
